Abstract:

A planarian belonging to the group D. gonocephala s.l. was found in 13 sites in Sardinia (11 in the catchment area of the Rio Mannu of Porto Torres and 2 in that of the Coghinas). It is morphologically related to D. benazzii Lepori of Sardinia and Corsica but presents a different karyotype: 2n = 14; n = 7 chromosomes instead of 2n = 16; n = 8 chromosomes. The latter is the most common in the superspecies D. gonocephala of central European and Mediterranean distrubution areas. The planarian in question was considered a distinct species with the group D. gonocephala s.l. and the denomination D. hepta sp. nov. is proposed.
