Abstract:

The occurrence in Hong Kong of a freshwater planarian species Dugesia japonica Ichikawa et Kawakatsu, 1964, is reported. A taxonomic revision of every known record of Dugesia in China is also given. Stimpson’s (1857) 3 uncertain species established from Hong Kong and the E China Sea area (Planaria sinensis, P. cinerea and P. badia) seem to be identical with D. japonica, the commonest and polymorphic form distributed widely in the NE area of the Far East including the Japanese Islands. It is suggested that it would be better to suppress the names of Stimpson’s species as nomina oblita than to rename the now well-established D. japonica.
